Title: SEPTA Awards and Update on Common Core Standards

Description: Celebrate with SEPTA at our end of the school year celebration. We will recognize some of our exceptionally dedicated staff members and also get an update on the common core standards implementation.

SEPTA Awards and Recognitions 2011 – 2012

This May we will celebrate the year by recognizing some outstanding Oldham County ECS educators, collaborative ECS teams, supporting staff, and outside professionals.
ALL Oldham County staff, parents and SEPTA members may submit these recognitions. School PTAs are also encouraged to submit recognitions.
New simplified recognition forms will be available at the February, March, and April meetings. Recognitions may also be submitted on-line beginning in mid February on our web site. Click Nomination Forms from the main menu to access online forms or download forms to mail in. ALL recognitions must be made by April 17th, 2012, whether submitted on-line, hand delivered to a school, or postmarked to our mailing address (SEPTA, PO Box 454 Crestwood, Ky. 40014).

Title: Planning For Your Dependent with Special Needs: Making Their Future More Secure
Location: The Annex, 1900 Button Lane, La Grange
Description: As the direction of Medicaid and SSI becomes difficult to predict and benefits often prove inadequate, it has become critical for parents to plan for the future of their child or dependent with Special Needs. This Workshop covers Legal Issues, including Wills, Trusts, Special Needs Trusts, and Guardianship. Financial Issues, such as Special Needs Trust Funding, Medicaid and SSI. Family Issues, including Letter of Intent and Family involvement in the process. Presented by MetLife Center for Special Needs Planning Special Needs Financial Planner, and parent, Gordon Homes, CFP®.

Description: This cutting edge informational meeting will be let by Oldham County teacher Amy Pierce. Learn how to fit technology into your child’s IEP and also gather ideas that you can use at home to help your child improve his or her skills.

Title: Parent to Parent Night Out
Location: TBD
Description: Call to reserve your place at a free social event for the entire family. Parents will have an opportunity to meet and talk with other parents of special needs children over a casual Mexican Taco Bar Dinner. We are providing free professional childcare by reservation. The children will enjoy a pizza dinner while in childcare. Please check with us if you have allergy concerns. Because we are providing professional behavior therapists for childcare, we have a limited number of spaces. Please call Liz Glenn at 292-0688 to secure a spot for your family. Call early!

Title: Fall Family Mixer ***Please Note Meeting Topic Change ***
Location: The Annex, 1900 Button Lane, La Grange
Description: Join us for a relaxed family social event. Although our scheduled special education law speaker had to cancel unexpectedly, we will still meet. We’ll have refreshments and a chance to talk to other parents. With the holidays approaching we will use this meeting time to share strategies for navigating this hectic time of year with a special needs child. We will also give away a great door prize, the Wrightslaw Book: Special Education Law.

Note: The SEPTA General Business Meeting will be postponed until our regular November meeting.

Title: New English Language Arts and Math Common Core Standards and How They Impact Special Education
Location: The Annex, 1900 Button Lane, La Grange
Description: The Common Core State Standards were designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of consistent, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked K-12 academic standards in English Language Arts and Math. This workshop will give a basic overview of the new standards, as well as information on how to navigate conversations with school leaders and teachers.
