New English Language Arts and Math Common Core Standards and How They Impact Special Education

The Common Core State Standards were designed to improve educational outcomes for students by developing a set of consistent, voluntary, internationally-benchmarked K-12 academic standards in English Language Arts and Math. This workshop will give a basic overview of the new standards, as well as information on how to navigate conversations with school leaders and teachers.

Join us for a relaxed family social event. Although our scheduled special education law speaker had to cancel unexpectedly, we will still meet. We’ll have refreshments and a chance to talk to other parents. With the holidays approaching we will use this meeting time to share strategies for navigating this hectic time of year with a special needs child. We will also give away a great door prize, the Wrightslaw Book: Special Education Law.
Note: The SEPTA General Business Meeting will be postponed until our regular November meeting.

Parents will have an opportunity to meet and talk with other parents of special needs children over a casual Mexican Taco Bar Dinner. We are providing free professional childcare by reservation. The children will enjoy a pizza dinner while in childcare. Please check with us if you have allergy concerns. As the direction of Medicaid and SSI becomes difficult to predict and benefits often prove inadequate, it has become critical for parents to plan for the future of their child or dependent with Special Needs. This Workshop covers Legal Issues, including Wills, Trusts, Special Needs Trusts, and Guardianship. Financial Issues, such as Special Needs Trust Funding, Medicaid and SSI. Family Issues, including Letter of Intent and Family involvement in the process.
